An expert talk on the “Principles and Applications of UV, IR, and NMR Spectroscopy” was organized by Applied Sciences Department on 13th March 2026 for the first year engineering students. The session was delivered by Dr. Kashma, a Post-Doctoral scholar in Chemistry currently teaching at DAV College Sector 10 Chandigarh. The primary objective of the session was to strengthen students’ conceptual and practical understanding of modern spectroscopic techniques. The expert explained the working principles, instrumentation, and step-by-step procedures involved in UV, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. She elaborated on electronic transitions in UV spectroscopy, molecular vibrations and functional group identification in IR spectroscopy, and structural elucidation using NMR spectroscopy. Students were guided on interpreting spectral graphs and understanding how different frequencies and absorption patterns help in determining molecular structure. Dr. Sharma also highlighted the wide range of applications of spectroscopy in science and technology. She discussed its importance in chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, material characterization, pharmaceutical research, forensic investigations, medical diagnostics, and astronomical studies. Real-world examples and practical insights were shared to help students connect theoretical concepts with industrial and research applications.
